Information Technology Jobs in Dubai
Dubai has become one of the most desirable destinations for tourists, professionals and investors because of its business-friendly environment, cosmopolitan lifestyle and world-class infrastructure. One attractive factor that accounts for the preferential choice of Dubai or the United Arab Emirates as a whole is the tax-free income structure which means that the salary package indicated in the employee’s contract is the same amount received without the dreaded payroll deductions. Income received each pay day is exactly what is on paper, the contract that is. Dubai offers a high quality of living. With the city's fast growing economy and outstanding employment prospects that come with competitive salary package and benefits, it is of little wonder that Dubai attracts hordes of Information Technology (IT) professionals to come join the workforce of highly-performing professionals from around the world in their field. Dubai has indeed become a hotspot for job seekers and international companies interested to relocate or set up, establishing business operations in the region.
Throughout the region, opportunities in the IT sector abound. There are opportunities to get hired as either contractual or permanent staff. There are different types of IT jobs that require professional skills. For instance, if you apply as a program developer or programmer, you are required to have keen knowledge and skill to develop a program in SAP, Oracle, Java, C++, and so forth, depending on what the company requires with respect to the computer software to be applied. There are also some IT companies that have offices in Dubai. These include Logica, CMG, KPMG, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Microsoft and Intel Corporation which offer employment opportunities to IT professionals from other countries.
An aspirant for any IT job in Dubai must bear in mind that employers in Dubai expect a high level of qualifications which includes substantial work experience at a minimum of 2 – 3 years performing progressive and relevant responsibilities. The applicant’s Curriculum Vitae and covering letters should be impressive and knowledge should be in line with the specific job applied for, so relevant skills and work experience should be emphasized. Language abilities should also be indicated with appropriate proficiency levels.
Initial interviews are often conducted through telephone, video conferencing, or person to person mode as some employers or their representatives may go to the country where a group of applicants for their various job openings are. This phase of the interview is often brief and informal. It is common to conduct more than one interview.
Work ethics in the information technology field runs high because of the high expectations of employers, thus, working in Dubai or anywhere in the Emirates in the field of IT is a challenge. Successful candidates need to always be on their toes, consistently delivering outputs on a par with company expectations. The standard working hours is 8 hours a day for 5 days a week. There is also a dress code. Typical business attire is suit with shirt and tie for men and formal office attire for women. This dress code must be strictly followed in spite of the sweltering heat.
There is a strong demand for IT products and services among UAE and Dubai-based companies. The IT industry offers opportunities both in the hardware and software lines of employment. The income structure is, however, higher for those handling software compared to their counterparts with hardware skills because the nature of the job. Some of the most popular job position titles in the field of IT that are in demand in Dubai are: information research scientist, hardware and software engineer, systems manager, systems analyst, programmer, database administrator, network systems and data communications analyst, network and computer systems administrator, and computer support specialist.
Candidates must first ascertain whether they would be able to perform the job responsibilities of the position being eyed. Misrepresentation as to skills and proficiency levels will not get them anywhere but trouble. Despite the relevance of their educational background, in the absence of solid experience in relevant responsibilities, it would be impossible to get around in a Dubai company. They cannot expect to be pampered and trained unless they are advised about such training at the outset. As earlier discussed, applicants are faced with high employer expectations. Any claim as to technical capabilities must be readily backed up by hand-on competence. If the actual scenario to prove one's capabilities does not happen during the application period, as the professional gets on the job, his actual skills level would show and there won't be anyone out there to teach rudiments.
As Dubai continues to grow and advance in technologies, the companies in this emirate will have an even increasing demand for highly-qualified and self-motivated individuals to fill in key positions for information technology jobs.
