People who come to Dubai to work are filled with the hope of a better quality of life. Many look to Dubai as that place in the world which now has more job opportunities than in other countries. These are aspirations that are attainable in the emirate given certain conditions, the main one of which is to be able to deliver according to the employers’ standards of competence and productivity.

In spite of the high work standards and strict practices in Dubai and the entire UAE, workers in good companies enjoy generous benefits from the company they work in. It pays to work in good-performing companies, particularly in this part of the world where money is not an object if your own performance as a worker passes the standards set by management and if you do not violate their laws.

But if you do not belong to good-performing companies, then you are less fortunate than those who do. There is a set of laws, however, that would protect you—laws that are part of the Labor Code in the United Arab Emirates governing employer-employee relations. These laws have specific provisions with respect to the following, and more: the number of working hours, medical benefits, leave, termination rights, and repatriation. Before you finalize your decision to work in Dubai and before you sign anything, you are advised to exercise due diligence and research on the working conditions in the area. The Middle East has a very unique culture so it is best that you come prepared. Even their holidays and working days and hours are different from what you have been accustomed to. Most importantly, read up on the UAE Labor Law, specifically the UAE Law No. 8 of 1980 as amended by Law No. 12 of 1986. This is something that you can readily google.

Dubai has a high standard when it comes to employee performance and employee attitude. Employers, particularly the top companies, are driven by productivity considerations and have a liberal reward system that translates to employee benefits. Many of these good-performing companies are open to initiatives in improving work conditions in the pursuit of greater productivity and in order to maintain their status in the industry. This is a way also for these companies to be able to attract good-quality people to come and work for them. Many are inclined to offer long-term full-time career with growth opportunities for high-performing individuals who also have proven trustworthiness in the workplace.
Dubai is a vast workplace where you can try to find opportunities for work that best suit you. Full-time jobs are mostly what are available in the emirate, with some opportunities for part-time work, too. But full-time work is more the norm in this area.

When you work in Dubai, make sure you really work your best. There are employers that practice the attitude: “Well if you don’t like…leave”. As worker, take them at their word and, if things are not working out anymore, then leave. This is a normal attitude in Dubai and you must know how to deal with it properly. – Miles Brown
