Arab female workers have suffered more than men from the global financial turbulence and could still pay a heavy price without government counter-measures, according to a United Nations organisation.
Despite an increase in their numbers in the Arab labour market, they lag far behind women in other countries and this should prompt regional states to change their gender policies, the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (Escwa) said.
Escwa, which groups the six Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) states and nine other Middle Eastern countries, said its experts had prepared two separate studies on the impact of the crisis on Arab women and they would be presented at a forthcoming UN conference on female workers in the region...
