Even before it officially comes into effect, the Wage Protection System (WPS) for workers in the UAE has already seen more than 100,000 salaries disbursed in July and August, up from 28,000 in June, according to official sources.
Saqr Ghobash, UAE Labour Minister, said the WPS has received great priority at both local and international levels even before it comes into effect as per the ministerial decision number 788 of the year 2009.
The WPS will be officially operational with the salaries for September, which are due in early October, in accordance with the decision.
Many firms registered with the WPS system well before its official inauguration in October, Ghobash said.
