For geting a residency visa a sound knowledge of local culture be a pre-requisite in the future for expatriates.Ahmad Shabeeb Al Dhahiri, First Deputy Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC) said that a new committee would be set up in October to develop strategies in this regard.
 
The committee will comprise of members from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It will formulate a series of easy questions that will comprise a test that expatriates will be required to pass in order to get their residency visa.
 
He said questions could include the following: “What is the country’s official religion?” and “What is the country’s flag?’
 
Embassies and consulates will be made aware of the guidelines laid out by the committee.
 
According to Al Dhahiri, the objective of the cultural test is to educate expatriates on the customs, traditions and culture of the UAE which would enable them to interact better with Emiratis.
